Telephony Stackexchange - Please commit!

As many of you may be aware, www.stackoverflow.com is a wonderful place to ask and answer programming related questions. They have expanded to include topics on a vast array of topics. Some of the expansions have been fantastic, others pitiful. There is currently a proposal stackexchange site for Telephony. It still requires community members to commit to making the site a success, so it hasn't even launched yet. It has been in a state of "accepting committers" for quite a few months now, and hasn't gained any real traction yet.

I'm aware that such a site would compete directly with sggu (as sggu competes directly with Genesys' own internal forums), but I feel that an entire site built on the stackexchange engine for Telephony would help us all tremendously. There is no easy way to ask and answer genesys related questions, and forums have been shown to not be a great medium for this type of task.

So, I'm asking any (and all) of you, to help commit to the site. If you don't know what stackoverflow or stackexchange is, I invite you to learn about it yourself. They really are great resources for nearly any topic you can think of.

To commit to helping the Telephony community in general, please follow this link http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/12932/telephony?referrer=oh8HEbIMCeo1 or this link if you're sceptical about a referrer link http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/12932/telephony, and commit to the proposal.

I'm sorry if this constitutes as spam. If the mods are not accepting of this post, I understand that it may be removed.

Thanks

Well actuallly Genesys compete with SGGU, they copied the idea from here :)
The issue I see is that this is a Genesys dedicated site, there are many others that go for SIP, VoIP, UM, etc. I personally like this site because I know all threads are Genesys only or very related so I can find almost always something very useful to work on with. Going to a generic site will surely show some info but will mix it with Cisco, Avaya, etc. so would be more complex to know if that already applies to my question...

That is my POV

In what are handbags related to Genesys? ;)

@sggu - any chance of a spam filter?

@smeatonj - I tried to 'commit' as requested but was extremely turned off by the experience. The reason I decided to do it was to try and give something back ... I cannot count the number of times an answer on a StackExchange site has helped me but I am never logging in to 'area51' again - sorry.

Perhaps the powers that be here in sggu might look at migrating to a question/answer model like StackExchange? There must be not-for-profit free solutions out there ...

cavagnaro -
Very good point you make. Also, people become very attached to their own communities, and it can be extremely hard to watch it go off somewhere else. However, being 'among the first' and very knowledgable means you can help shape the community.

As far as the fragmentation goes, they've actually shown that having a broader scope (such as telephony instead of strictly genesys) encourages much greater participation due to those that are cross skilled I guess. There are ways to 'focus on' on your specific area of interest by selecting tags you wish to follow.

I committed to the proposal months and months ago. I didn't like the experience then, either, but I can't remember why for the life of me. Would you mind mentioning what made it so horrible? I'll head over to the meta site and start a discussion about it.

I really don't think the 'knock-off competitors' would be ideal. For one, it wouldn't be linked to the other network which is part of the 'fun' for some people (myself included). The SE network also has a team of folk dedicated to promoting and engaging community - setting up events, giving away free stuff, etc.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. I know I probably won't change any minds. But the number of development related questions, here and at the genesys forums, seems very very small considering how many of us are our there suffering every day with poor documentation.

The only thing I remember clearly was that they created a bogus ID for me and wouldn't let me merge it with any of my existing SE IDs - in fact I couldn't even disassociate from it (deleted cookies etc) and the process for removing it was hidden and stupidly convoluted.

Fair points regarding the benefits of larger networks etc but it would certainly be a step in the right direction to move SGGU to a Q&A model ... Anyway - I don't suppose any of us should hold our breaths.
