Post by: victor on October 02, 2007, 04:58:03 AM
Why, or why?

I thought it was supposed to be

http://www.sggu.com/smf/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml

but it does not...

what the heck?!

Victor, have you installed the RSS block for tinyportal?

The URL you listed is for a basic SMF forum, but tinyportal destroys that. Also as you are on SMF 1.1.4 you need to upgrade tinyportal to v0.9.8 as 0.9.7 is not fully compatible with smf 1.1.4

Hi, Sy278!!! Welcome back!!!

I have been waiting for your comeback because you are probably the most knowledgeable person on the planet when it comes to SMF (no sarcasm intended!).

I will upgrade as you have suggested right away...

BTW, someone managed to install pscan in our /tmp directory...bastard!

Hi, Mark,
I managed to fix it - it seems like TP upgrade managed to overwrite the scrolling sript I wrote for Recent box. It took me three hours to figure it out.

Now, I have to figure out how to get rid of that HUGE Genesys logo that comes in with RSS.

Do you have any other RSS you would suggest to mix with Genesys? Because I am not too keen on Turkey Genesys Seminar or what is happening in Greece or Russia.

Vic

Good question, not really thought about other technically work specific feeds really!

What im more concerned about is that the forums own rss feed is still missing.

First, make sure you've enabled the feeds:

Admin -> News and Newsletters -> Settings
Check the box next to "Enable XML/RSS News".
The "Maximum post length" value determines how many characters of a post are output in the feeds. The default value (255) is fine for now

Now, on to the fun stuff.

All of the XML content is accessed via the ".xml" action...
Other formats can be achieved by adding one of the following to the URL:
;type=atom - Atom
;type=rdf - RDF
;type=rss - RSS 0.91
;type=rss2 - RSS 2.0

The default feed is the 5 most recent posts:
http://www.sggu.com/smf/index.php?action=.xml

There are several "sub-actions" available to this action, specifying exactly what to display:

Recent Posts (displays the most recent posts that you can see)
"Sub-action": recent
Default: Shows 5 most recent posts
Available options:
limit=x - display the "x" most recent posts (if number is less than 5, it will display 5. If number is larger than 255, it will display 255).
board=y - display only the recent posts from board "y"
boards=x,y,z - display only the recent posts from the specified boards
c=x or c=x,y,z - display only the recent posts from boards in the specified category/categories
Example: http://www.sggu.com/smf/index.php?action=.xml;sa=recent;board=72;limit=10

News (displays the first post from the most recent topics that you can see)
"Sub-action": news
Available options:
limit=x - display only "x" items
board=y - display only news topics from board "y"
boards=x,y,z - display only news topics from the specified boards
c=x or c=x,y,z - display only news topics from boards in the specified category/categories
Example: http://www.sggu.com/smf/index.php?action=.xml;sa=news;board=72;limit=10

Thank you the detailed instructions, Sy278!
I will put it together over the weekend!

Howcome you are so knowledgeable about SMF?

Just used it a few times.

If you do the very first step it only takes seconds and will enable the forums own rss output, which will allow it to be syndicated and for people like myself to monitor it on rss readers such as google reader.

I tried it - and wow, talk about getting a long list... I just added sggu.com and list went on for like 1000 pages... how do you prevent people from getting thousands of posts by just specifying sggu.com?

Don't worry about it, whe you view the feed in the reader the reader pulls in all the posts it has never seen before, so once you mark them all read it will only pull in the new ones.

hello YouTube Team, I like the different featured videos by countries but I cannot navigate if I switch to Japanese, Polish, etc. I would like to keep English language (or my mother tongue) even if I change the country. Any possibility of this in the future? Thank you.

I wish I was a YouTube team because then I would not have to worry about getting a salary anymore...

I see hwo easy it is for someone to mistaken us for YouTube, after all, that ".com" at the end of both of the sites looks so damn similar... Wait!!! It is the same!
And all these icon animations definitely can confuse even the most experienced of internet stalkers!  :(
