Title: What's with the Karma, Man...?
Post by: tony on December 10, 2007, 10:42:35 PM
Hey Vic!

I got a Karma value of zero - and an applaud and a smite against everyone else's posts, for me to vote against...?  What's it all about...?

I believe that if I like your post or answer I will applaud you and your Karma will rise, if I odn't like you I can choose smite and your Karma will go down...
Now for what it was configured...only Vic can tell.

Sorry, you can't repeat a karma action without waiting 1 hours.

Sorry about this, guys...
There were all these different options in the administration panel.
One of them was "KARMA". It seems like you give plus to people who offer sound advice and your smite those who are not. I was going to remove it, but then Cavagnaro started using it, so I decided to postpone it.

I think it would be a good experiment to see how people would start rating others. I am not sure if "applaud" and "smite" were the best way to express it. I am thinking about changing it to "Useful", "Useless" or something like that.

What do you think?

By the way, Daimonas, the first time I read your post and then saw the pic next to it, I bursted out laughing... while in a meeting with our clients. Not a good sign!

It's all a bit subjective, isn't it..?

I mean, the "usefulness" of an answer/solution is subjective to whether it addresses the issue, if it is the right answer and also in either understanding or interpreting the content.  if the answer is correct in all respects but the recipient does not comprehend or agree with the answer, that could cause a person to "smite" when in actual fact it is sound advice...

To be honest, it doesn't bother me either way but I thought it was worthy of mentioning... We had something like it before, where the icon for a Subject was updated to a "thumbs up", for a Solution or Good Response and that sort of died off too...

So - smite me! :)

I did not realize how smite/applaud will become something of a competitive sport for some. So, Cavagnaro is 1 and Daimonas is 0...

The only one who has any points is Tony. I wonder what he paid people to give him a point! :P ::)

lol I go up and down up and down lol
I think as there no even justification on why the users do this it's useless. How can I know why they decided to add or rest a point?

I think it is very arbitrary for right now, and I do not really pay too much attention to it. Let's see what happens over a period of few weeks and then decide. I really don't care one way or another about it.

It would be more usefull if you could actually see who smited or applauded you. That way someone will think twice before using foolishly  >:D I also like the rating system some forums use, where the poster rates the answers or give points to the most correct answer.

Uhmmm... I'd rather not go there! :P

I think that overall, it seems to be working... Smite/Applaud might not be the right wording, but gradually people increase their point count by quality of post. It is all arbitrary, yes, but at the end of the day, what is not arbitrary when it comes to 600+ member group?
