Title: mmmm spam on this forum
Post by: Adam G. on November 11, 2008, 09:13:00 PM
I removed 11 posts and don't have the rights to remove the Michelle Obama one. Is this a record for one day?

I know, this is weird. I am deleting them almost hourly now and banning IPs left and right.
There are two types of spam - with link and without. With link, I made sure that links cannot be added if you are not a member, but non-link one, I have trouble identifying the keywords...

According to my stats the biggest spam is ...dog-related?!!!! Pavel - did you subscribe to some sort of canine bride magazine and used our site as a reference of character? :)

What the hell!
Seriously, we are being spammed like crazy right now. I am not sure how to stop this since most of the spammers are not registering and I don't want to make it a REGISTER-ONLY forum.

What happened in the last week that caused such a spike? Pavel, Tony - who did you piss off?

Funny you should ask... errr... I did piss off some Genesys guys, earlier in the week...

...they wouldn't - would they...?

you never know, you never know... this is an incredible number of spam!!!
And what is worse, they are really persistent in cracking CAPTCHA! This is amazing!...

Ok, I figured what is going on - these bastards were very smart - they have noticed that there is a way to brute-force the registration by just entering the numbers and then using back button - this way new digits are never generated and all you have to do is repeat the process until you register. Needless to say, this is pretty crude.

So, I fixed that part of the code  :)

So, now we are not going to have registered bots anymore. I hope.  :-\

There is still a problem with bots putting really annoying one liners all over the place, so perhaps a captcha for unregistered users should take care of that as well. I am trying very hard to avoid this, though...

Well, let's see...

Go Vic, you are our hero, defeat them!! I'll send Cavagnaro to neuter them in the meanwhile  ;D

I think the problem is we DID send Cavagnaro to neuter them... But I think he ended up neutering a cute white poodle somewhere near Minsk, and now Pavel is on a war path... God help us!

I am happy to announce since I have modified our CAPTCHA, SPAM originated by an upset Belorussian poodles after Pavel's swing through Minsk has left them broken hearted yet, is now officially taken care of.

I think there is a reason for spaying pets after a certain age...

Hi Guys sorry for the long absence, but the only way to stop this is to enable registration or find a visual verification mod using catcha that requires unregistered posters to complete the captcha before it will accept the post.
