Title: GVP 7.6 installation and configuration on WMWare
Post by: frdesimo on December 19, 2008, 10:59:40 AM
Hello,
i've installed on a virtual machine all the GVP suite 7.6 integrated with the framework 7.5 for testing purposes, the operative system is windows 2003 server.
I'm not able to start the watchdog in normal mode because the popgateway itn't starting, so i can start it only in safemode and even this way the popgateway doesn't start.
From the popgateway log it seems to be a problem related to media codec and sip stack, but all other processes, even the sip session manager and resource manager are up and running.
Attached are the pop gateway logs.
Any suggestion?
Thanks
Francesco

Hi Francesco,

I see in the log that PopGateway isn't able open port 5060. Please check that port is free and not occupied by other application. You can use netstat or TCPView from Sysinternals for such "investigation".
[2007/10/11 08:58:05.961] 1D34 GSIPTSLogSystem.cpp:31 C=45:L=2:U=0 CGCLLListener: Unable to open port 5060 for listening, result -1
Please double-check that you haven't specified the same port number in GVP configuration (PopGateway, SIP Session Manager, Resource Manager etc.) several times.

Hi Renč,
i've followed the wizard installation for GVP.
Regarding the ports i've used the 5060 for sip session manager and the 5070 for resource manager.
The sip server on the framework is using the port 9995 for the agent registration.
I'll check the ports on the virtual machine but it'll take some time considered that the system is very slow even with 1,5 Gb.
I think that i'm asking to much from such a system, but it would be great to see some gvp application on my virtual machine...  ;D
Thanks a lot for your help.
This forum is great, i'll use it a lot in the future for my work.

It is quite strange, in ems sip session manager and resource manager are up and running, but with the netstat command i see no connection with both ports, neither is possible for me to estabilish telnet connections on these ports (so no process is hearing on 5060 and 5070)
Any suggestions?

GVP is one of the few products these days that isn't supported on VMWare. Having said that, one other thing to check is that the network binding is correct... are you using a loopback connector + a virtual LAN for the VM? if you don't actually require network access to the VM from the host it's sometimes best to configure a Microsoft Loopback adapter as the only network device -- then disable the virtual network device.
How much memory does the host system have? (from your notes I am guessing that the guest is the system with 1.5GB allocated).
Response speed is also a definite factor when trying to run GVP on a VM.

I didn't know that it was unsupported, good to know.
Anyway, when i tried last year a GVP installation i had a problem with the starting of IPCS and i realized that it was due to the lack of memory, i had 1 Gb of memory, so i gave on the VM only 0.75 Gb.
Now that i've 2 Gb RAM and i've given 1,5 Gb to the VM it is starting, but i've the problem on the pop gateway.
I've no need for the network connection on the VM, i'll try the configuration you're suggesting me and then i'll let you know.
Thanks a lot.

Francesco,

Please post here logs of SIP Session Manager and Resource Manager. It's hard to say what went wrong without logs...

Can you increase the logs level to 0x07?

Just a quick insert that though Genesys Support publicly states that they do not support GVP under VM, they are and have been for a couple of years.  Having said that, hopefully everyone realizes that no components with an RTP stream should be virtualized.

All of the EMS components are clearly the first place to look for virtualization.  That's what what we did for our PROD environment.

We have virtualized IPCM in our labs but have not implemented in PROD.

WAS can be virtualized, but probably has the least ROI in PROD.  Running VMWare ESX, capacity is reduced 37% in our testing.  However, we run WAS virtualized in our labs for ease of managing the ever changing environments.  If we ever get to a point where the WAS servers become too much of a mgmt burden, we might spend more time tweaking the configuration to see if we can increase capacity, but for now it isn't a priority for us.

Hi all,

I have installed GVP in my labo on VMWare - and I have no problem with that. It is even integrated with Genesys (through IVRServer) and with OCS (based on OBN). I can understand that Genesys doesn't support such configuration on production environment, but there is no problem with set it working.

Hi Jbobinsk:

Just to confirm, you're able to install GVP 7.6 inside a VMware?  I've had luck with several versions leading up to 7.6 (specifically, 6.5, 7.0, 7.2, and 7.5), but have never been able to get the watchdog to start successfully after installing or upgrading to 7.6.

If you do have 7.6 running, were there any special or different steps required?

Thank you,
Tony

Try the 7.6.4 patch, no idea what the problem was with 7.6 having similar issues in our lab, but the key was the .4 release patch.
