Title: DB Servers One or Many?
Post by: Rory on January 01, 1970, 12:00:00 AM
Any views on the use of multiple DB Servers under Genesys v6.1?

The manuals suggests this is possible but don't gauge when you might want to do it. It looks like you definitely need one for the configuration database but then, it is better to run the ODS, Logs and Data Mart off another or to split these across mutiple DB Server instances?

Thoughts and opinions appreciated.

Generally you would have a configuration schema seperate from reporting at a minimum, so 2 DBServers are needed. Some other suggestions would be to even have different reporting functions on different schemas or users. For example custom statserver and UR data in one place and CCA/ODS data on in another area for example. hope this helps. It really depends on call center size, traffic etc to properly configure.

Rory,

technically, you can run G6 from a single server.
One of the benefits of running a single server environment would be if your Genesys is spread over separate environments such as NT and UNIX and you do not have an ability to control the startup order of each process. In other words, usually, you would not want your TServer to start before licence manager :) The same goes for DB Server if your Log DB Server starts before config server, it will attempt to connect 4 times and then it will shutdown... But, if your Log DB Server and DB Server is the same process, then you would not have to worry about it.

The big downside is the system load, traffic load and all the other things that may decrease your performance. (Trust me, you do not want your calls to be routed to default simply because URS was late trying to retrieve customer info). Of course should not worry about it unless you have ver 50 agents or so...(at least based on my experience).

The bottom line is that there is no reason why you be required to use both DB Servers. The best way to do is try it with a single and then, if you are experiencing performance elated problems, split it.

So, the bottom line is have multiple DB Servers if you can

Many thanks.

Some interesting thoughts I'd not covered. As we are doing a slow migration of a number of our call centres will start off with the 2 Db Servers and see how the performance goes as we bring other sites on line.

I'll post the performance stats back here once we're running, in case anyone is interested.

Dear Rory, I want to see your stats. how big is your contact center and what do you have in there?
