Global domination by the Evil Empire?
Probably to get themselves into the IP communications market, and to integrate that platform with other MS programs . Since Skype is already established, it'll save MS on the R&D costs...

Bandwidth = money
So now that MS has its all Exchange suite looking to be a Unified Communications suite and as users grows the bandwidth must also go up, what better to give your customer the chance to use the well so known and liked protocol called Skype already into that huge suite! Nice move from MS actually

Its official, Microsoft has acquired Skype for $8.5 billion. The rumors has been around since last night that Redmond based software giant is very close to file a deal with telephony giant Skype.
