Title: Genesys SIP server in standalone mode?

We are implementing the SIP server in standalone mode, connecting to the PSTN through AudioCodes mediagateways.  When reviewing the Genesys documentation (SIP server integration reference manual) it has the following note:

[i]Note: The instructions in this chapter assume that the AudioCodes Gateway is fully functional and connected to the corresponding PBX.[/i]

If we are deploying in standalone mode, why would we need a connection to a PBX?  Doesn't the SIP server provide the PBX functions in this case?

The PRI interface must be provided by a PBX, private or public PBX, the Audiocodes convert it to SIP and then SIP Server provides the functionalities you may need.

Thank you for replying so quickly.  Are you saying that it is not possible to implement the SIP server, in standalone mode, without having a PBX to interface with the PSTN?

PSTN will be connected to media gateways, which will convert to SIP.

We have Audiocodes Mediant 2000 gateways between the PSTN and the SIP server.

Hi NewToGenesys,

It's definitely possible to have standalone SIP Server deployed with AudioCodes withou need of any PBX. The sentence in documentation is a bit misleading... If you have some ISDN trunks (or other type of connection to PSTN) connected to your AudioCodes then you're okay.

Thank you for clarifying Rene.  I found the documentation very misleading.


Cavagnaro - my intent is not to annoy you, it is to clarify a confusing statement in the Genesys documentation.  Your reply indicated that you agreed with the Genesys docs ("The PRI interface must be provided by a PBX, private or public PBX").  We will not have a PBX in our configuration - hence my confusion.

I am new to Genesys and appreciate your time.  If you feel I am wasting it, please disregard my questions.

Well I think your question was answered since first reply and there is no confusion about the terms, but the use of them. PBX can be either public or private. Public will provide PSTN and private interconnection to another enterprise segment. Your SIP server will be your little PBX too.

What that note means is that you have already plugged the cables (E1) to your AudioCodes and the AudioCodes guy can certify that everything is ready for SIP Server to come into action.
