Can I test HA setup of GVP components using 2 Hosts only?
I am using Windows 2003 Ent.
GVP version is 8.1.6.
Which is preferred method for HA in SIP/RM? NLB or IP Address Takeover.
I need this so as to completely test all the components in HA setup mode before I setup on multiple hosts.

It depends on used operation system, but yes, you can do this with two host only. Only one GVP component (in release 8.1) which can fully HA is RM. Others components work in N+1 mode.
Only one suggestion/recommendation - do not use IP takeover for RM. Use NLB for Win env. or bonding for Linux env. I know, that bonding with only one interface does not make a sense, but from real-life experience I can say, it works more better than IP takeover

I will be using Windows NLB.
Cant i also use SIP HA since both SIP & RM are co-resident on the same host?
This is purely a test bed system to test the configurations steps for HA mode of GVP components.
In fact pg 89/510 of the GVP 8.1.6 Deployment Guide clearly mentions that a 2 host setup can be used for both SIP/RM HA setup.
Sample Configuration
The following task table outlines the basic steps required for an HA
deployment on Windows, with the following assumptions:
• This is a two-machine deployment, with one SIP Server and Resource
Manager instance co-deployed on each machine.
Appreciate your inputs.

I never used NLB, so I cannot tell my own experience. But I think it is possible, but be very careful during deployment and configuring SIP ports on RM. RM in general is using standard range of SIP ports (5060-5067), ie. same port as SIP. You have to change SIP ports of RM, for example increase with 100, to 5160-5167.

Hi,
Sample 2 hosts deployment in the Deployment Guide clearly states that RM is deployed in active-active mode so it means you need NLB for SIP Server only...
Please ensure that you have SIP Server 8.1.100.64 or newer that supports RM in active-active mode.

Hi Rene,
Thanks for the clarification.
As per page 88/510 in Deployment Guide and Fig 7 RM deployment is in Active - Standby mode as shown in the diagram.
Can you clarify why RM has to be in active - active if using 2 host deployment mode.
My objective is to be able to configure all the GVP components in a 2 Host deployment using 1 VIP for NLB and 1 more IP for internal communication.
Appreciate your valuable inputs.
Thanks

Hi,
Figure on page 88 is part of section detailing possible HA deployments for Resource Manager so it is not related to sample configuration described later in this section.
My recommendation to use RM in Active-Active deployment was based on fact that RM in Active-Standby deployment requires virtual IP thus you would need 2 VIPs (one for SIP Server and second one for RM) what should be tricky to achieve with two hosts deployment...
It would be best if you can deploy SIP Server 8.1.100.64 or later and GVP 8.1.7 as RM Active-Active with SIP Server is officially supported by these releases. Previous releases officially supported RM Active-Active with external load-balancer only.
