Title: SSL and Akamai
Post by: nonny on November 28, 2016, 08:42:47 AM
Hi guys

Not directly related to Genesys but has come about from using URS http bridge.

Is anybody familiar with akamai CDN etc at a deep level?

My issue and question is this:

URS calls an external webservice (let's call it https://deposit.mybank.com) to do a POST.

The first request of the day takes about 20 seconds.  Requests made anywhere up to 30-45minutes later are pretty quick.

Looking at WireShark I see the usual Client/Server hello messages.  It looks like a full SSL handshake is done each time.

What's different between the first and later https requests is that in the first I can see multiple requests to/from an akamai.net host.  Those requests don't show up in later calls.  If no requests are made for a while, once again it goes through akamai and takes up to 20 seconds.

This leads me to assume that the mybank.com web presence is hosted also on akamai's CDN.  I know nothing about how that all ties in.

But it seems that at the first call akamai caches or proxies something (possibly the cert validation) so that isn't performed again.

Would this be correct and if so, how can that first request response time be improved?
