Throttling the CME "Multiple Objects Update Wizard"...?

What a wonderful tool!  Something that allows administrators to update Skill Names against Persons - hundreds of them - all at the touch of a button...  Unfortunately CME is single threaded and, if you do try to apply 300 changes at once and your Framework is a bit wobbly (i.e. in HA or DR), all hell can break lose...

It would be great to remove it all together but it is built-in and our business have an "operational" need to use it, so no chance there... Does anyone have any ideas on how to limit/throttle the number of changes which can be applied, at any one time, within the MOUW?

I'm not looking for alternative methods, since the MOUW is already "part of the process" and in use in our Production area - I just wondered if there was a technical solution to throttling it.

Any ideas are most welcome...
