Why do we need external routing point in multisit

Vic:
Can someone please tell me why do we need an external routing points defined for multisite configuration in G6.1 if we are NOT using URS? Multisite wizard requires you to create an external routing point; however, looking through the call flow, I cannot see the call using it!
Also, any suggestions on do's and dont's for a multisite in G6.1?
