SIP server and URS upgrade

Hello all,

I've been a lurker of this forum for about 6 months. Around the same time I first got introduced to Genesys.

I've overtaken system administration responsibilities and one of the recomendations from Genesys has been to upgrade the SIP_Tserver from 7.5.000.67 to 7.5.000.99

and URS from
7.5.002.02 to 7.5.002.06

I have the required hotfix software from Genesys. I'm just wondering having never done this before, not having a whole lot of Genesys experience. How difficult are the upgrades to perform?

FYI I've done many patches and upgrades on other types of systems but
never on a Genesys system.

Thanks,

Please read Release note carefully... it is very easy....it is normal upgrade ... keep backup before start upgrade .. :)

It really comes down to the OS you are using.

On Unix systems you can just load the software into a new directory, then stop the existing apps, repoint the startup options in CME to your new directory and restart the app in SCI. The advantage here is that your old version is still there if you need to roll back.

On Windows you need to stop the app, uninstall it and then load the new code in to the same directory. In this case you don't need to make any changes in CME. But do make sure you have the old software before you start, as a roll back involves uninstalling the new version and reinstalling the old.

Once the new version is up and running you can check if there are any new config options that you might want to use, and add these to CME.

We are using Windows so we will definitely have to uninstall and re-install.

As for a back-up we do have the old software. For an immediate back-up we can rely on our virtual server snap shot that we take pre-upgrade.

Double grin about why RHEL is my OS of choice for Genesys deployments and there's nobody in my organization that can change my mind.  Of course, everyone in our org saw the immediate benefits once we moved off of Windows to Linux.  When you have thousands of  servers, would you choose your A or B scenario?  ;D

You're spot on regarding having the old SW on hand for a roll back.  Our run and maintain folks have some pretty cool upgrade/rollback tricks using a SAN, but they are light years ahead of me on the operational knowledge, I wouldn't try to explain the details for them.

Or you could use the upgrade wizard in CME.

I don't agree with Steve that you have to uninstall the old version. I don't. The only trick on Windows is the Windows Service for that piece of software which you can edit via regedit to point to the new software or let the installer create a new Service and disable the old one.
That way you have old and new software. You do have to update CME like you would for Linux.

1. Stop the services.
2. Uninstall the service(s)
3. Check that the service(s) was deleted from windows services (if it appears as disabled you must restart OS)
4. Install the new versions
5. Start the services

RPenney, I'm interested by this and have 2 questions.
Does the installer not detect the old version, and only give you the option of uninstalling?
What about registry keys? If you keep the old version are the registry keys not still pointing to that?

Thanks all.

I'm doing these upgrades asap. Seems as straight forward as you can get.

Really appreciate the input and I'll update with how things go.

Now you are pushing my memory!  :) I could be wrong on this.
1. The new installer doesn't look for the old version. This could be changing with Genesys Deployment Agent in 8.0. It may also be different behaviour with the Wizard.
2. What registry keys? :) Genesys server software doesn't use the registry for anything, it uses Config Server. The only registry keys set are for the Windows Service created on installation.

I have had multiple versions running on in a Windows VM, each with its own Windows Service

Yes, you're right about the registry keys, I'm getting my servers and clients mixed up  :-[

Thanks guys.

We did the URS upgrade yesterday and it went well. Very simple procedure. Turns out we just needed the process confirmation from yourselves to give us the confidence to go ahead and do it.

Thanks again.
