Hi,

I'm seeing an unusual problem with some applications in SCI and would like to know if anyone has had a similar experience.  Still primarily on 7.6 Framework with just a couple 8.1 apps (TServer, OCS).  Our primary server that runs DBServers, cfg server, message server, and SCS was unexpectedly restarted.  All apps failed over to backup, and the backups are running fine.  However only cfg dbserver and cfg server restarted on the primary server (in backup mode).  I tried to start SCS, message server, and another dbserver via SCI and they stay in "start pending" state for a minute and then revert back to "stopped".  If I check the services list on the server while SCI shows start pending, the service shows as started and then also reverts to stopped when SCI does.  So this is verifying to me that the start command from SCI/SCS is getting to the server and trying to start the app.

However, if I try to run the services for the apps directly from the server, they will start and remain started - but SCI still will not recognize them as running.  Also, and this is very strange, there are no new logs for the apps regardless of how I try to start them - so I can't find out why they aren't starting when I try from SCI, and I can't verify if they actually are starting and running correctly when I run them from services on the server.  Logging is configured correctly for them, we've had them writing logs for a few years without a problem and I usually always get a startup log even if full startup fails.  I tested further by stopping some non-critical backup applications from SCI - and they stop from the SCI commands, but now I have the same problem with them.  I can't restart them via SCI and when I go directly to the services on the host server, they start but SCI still shows them as stopped, and there are no startup logs from the restarts.

I don't think it's a problem with license manager, none of the applications that aren't showing correctly check out a license.  There's definitely connectivity from SCI/SCS (currently the backup) as I can stop apps from it and see statuses for other apps that haven't been stopped yet.  I'm hesitant to try shutting down the backups and forcing a switchover to the primary again, since without the logs I can't really verify that the primary apps are running correctly even if the server says the services are running.

Any experience with this or ideas?

I think your problem is why they didn't went to back up automatically.
As the apps need a CfgServer to know how to start when you install them you point to Backup, then if the backup fails they will be notified that backup assumed. However on your scenario, as they weren't up (backup) then you try to start an App that is pointing to main CfgServer only, and as it doesn't answer that app has no clue what is going on on your environment. You can start main CfgServer and then start the other apps. At least that way they will start, including SCS.
