Add a SIP Server off of Avaya switch with existing TServer

Hello everyone, I'm a complete newbie to the world of SIP technology so I would appreciate if some gurus can break things down for me.

My question is this, in my existing environment I have an Avaya PBX with the associated Avaya TServer now what my company would like to do is have a small group of agents go on IP phones to handle VoIP calls.

I'm wondering what that means from a Genesys component perspective.  Could I essentially add a SIP Server component to handel the VOIP calls and leave my existing TSERver to handle the traditional calls or would I essentially replace my existing TServer with the SIP Server handling both?  Any help/insight is appreciated.

Thanks,
Eugene

  • Hi eugene,

There are several ways how VoIP could be integrated into your existing environment.

The first one is that your existing Avaya switch will be upgraded/enhanced with VoIP support. There will be no changes to your Genesys architecture as these IP lines/extensions will be monitored in the same way as classic ones. The only change that could be caused by the upgrade of Avaya is upgrade of your TServer to support newer version of Avaya switch.

The second option is deployment of Genesys SIP server. In that case your environment becomes multi-site so you will have two TServers - one for Avaya switch and second for SIP. You have to deploy at least media gateway to be able handle calls coming from PSTN or your Avaya switch.

Hope the information above helps you

  • Hi,

I am practically going to say the same thing as René:

    1. Avaya can do VoIP. And it does it pretty good, especially 8700. You would not need to do anything. You can also install G650 VoIP gateway, which would allow you to get VoIP without the worries of modifying your Genesys (assuming your TServer is not from era before they found silicon)

    2. SIP Tserver would be another way to go. We you SIP server quite a lot, and it is pretty good. The problem in your case is that you would still need some sort of Avaya VoIP Gateway, or T1 and Cisco GW, and then on top of that, you would need Genesys infrastructure as well.

So, if you are just thinking about adding a small group of agents, I would just plug in a VoIP card into Avaya and be done with it. Usually, you would not need to modify your Genesys environment one bit (other than adding a few new DNs for those new phones).

Remember - Genesys is only doing event signaling at your current site. Despite its great strength in SIP, it would not make sense to spend money and time and learn from scratch about its voice capabilities (and peculiarities) unless you are thinking of getting rid of your Avaya.

    Best regards,
    Vic

  • Thanks Vic & Rene.  The information you guys provided makes a lot of sense. Not sure on the reasoning, but it seems like the latter approach is what my company is leaning towards.

  • Eugene,

    please, as always!  ;D

Perhaps, they are thinking about this as a pre-lude to full SIP migration? Who knows! The important thing is that you start catching up on your SIP Tserver, including:

    1. if you are going to use HA - make sure you got Cluster server or NLB
    2. Softphone or deskphone version of SIP PHONE!!!! (you will need it - we had to develop it for our clients, since they did not want to install deskphone version in a remote location)
    3. VoIP GW and SIP interface - check, check, check!

As always, bug us if you need some help or have a question!
